Head of the Ojota Unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Assistant Corps Commander Ganiyu Hamzat, on Thursday said Lagos drivers, in comparison to other states, had the best driving culture.
He said this during an Ember Month road campaign road organised in partnership with Honeywell Nigeria Plc.
Hamzat said, “The annual Ember Month campaigns are having the desired effect; Lagos drivers have improved greatly compared to other states. They have a better driving culture, perhaps due to the fact that there is a larger presence of various security agencies on the road. They are more aware of road and traffic signs and try to adhere to driving rules and regulations.”

Cautioning drivers not to drink and drive during the festive season, Hamzat said that more FRSC officials had been deployed to augment the presence of those on the field. He also commended the management of Honeywell Plc for their partnership.
He said, “Many people take alcohol and drive during this period; we should desist from that. You still have other months to take alcohol; we have just one life to live.
“Aside from the Ember Months campaign, at the local level, the FRSC has devised various means of enforcement. There is the Passengers Watch where our officials board vehicles like normal passengers and any driver driving recklessly will be arrested or booked appropriately.
“We also have the Precinct Inspection, where vehicles at motor parks are inspected by our officials before they take off. The usual penalties stated in our notice of offence booklet await any defaulter. There are also devices by which we determine the blood sugar level and pressure of drivers.”
Managing Director Designate of Honeywell, Mr. Lanre Jaiyeola, said there was a need for the partnership as most of their products also travel by road.
He said, “We as a company also use the road extensively; our products travel far and wide in the country, therefore we feel committed to partner with the FRSC to educate Nigerians on this awareness. We just want to educate Lagosians on the need to be very careful at this time.
“There is a high tendency for Nigerians to be in a rush, in a hurry to purchase things at this time. But while we do that, we don’t pray that things end up in calamity. Therefore, all we are doing as we have done in the years past is to partner with the FRSC to create awareness among road users as they go, to be very careful and mindful of other commuters on the road.”
The road show was flagged off at the Ojota motor park where Hamzat gave a brief speech to the drivers, educating them on the need to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations.
